Looking Back on 2016

What a year it’s been! From an insane amount of celebrity deaths, Brexit and even Donald Trump becoming president of the United States, I think most people would agree that 2016 has been nothing short of crazy.

However… 2016 has been a pretty good year for me. With the exception of the passing of my Nan in July – yes, many ‘normal’ people have passed away this year too, not just celebrities – I’ve had a life-changing, adventurous year, filled with travel and new experiences.

This time last year I was in Gran Canaria, and whilst I was there I made the decision to actively start making changes so that I wouldn’t have to live a ‘normal’ life anymore. And by ‘normal’ I mean the Monday to Friday 9-5 sort of normal. I know this works for some people, but it’s just not for me! So I decided I would travel more, try to become location independent, and do a trial-run living in Spain.

The Round-Up

Places I travelled: Gran Canaria, Barcelona, Nerja, Málaga, Torremolinos, Cambridge, Rome, and Naples.
Longest time away: 4 weeks in the Costa del Sol
New experiences: House sitting
Most rewarding experience: Volunteering as an English Language teacher

The Nitty Gritty

Even though this year has flown by, I can’t believe all the things I’ve managed to do. The thing I’ve enjoyed most of course, is the travelling! From city breaks in Barcelona and Rome, to spending a month in sunny Spain, I will never tire of jetting off to Europe.

In October I took a TEFL course, and 3 months later I’m now qualified in TEFL (teaching English as a Foreign Language) and TESOL (teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). I have since done some volunteer teaching which I absolutely loved!

Meeting my partner 5 months ago was one of the best things that happened this year. It’s still early days of course, but it’s going well and we’re having lots of fun. I started the year as a fiercely independent, female solo-traveller (high-five ladies!) and vowed that I did not need a partner to go travelling with. That is still true, and I wouldn’t hesitate to jet off somewhere on my own tomorrow.

Are You Nearly Done?

Yes, I’m finished waffling about 2016, and can’t wait to see what 2017 brings! I’ll leave you with a few things that I remind myself of everyday; be happy (if you’re not happy, do something about it!), be positive (you only get back what you put in), be kind to people, and make the most of your time because none of us know how long we’ve got. Peace out.
